The Power of Friendship and Growth Across Decades

In 1974, two women with a shared passion for learning and leadership crossed paths at the National Training Labs (NTL). Decades later, their friendship continues to inspire growth, self-awareness, and a commitment to ethical leadership.

Dr. Jackalyn and Shanti Gilbert have navigated extraordinary journeys. Dr. Jackalyn, with a doctorate in counseling psychology and nearly five decades of entrepreneurial experience, has dedicated her life to combating ageism, fostering diversity, and championing cultural competency. At 82, she reflects on the joy of living a life rich with purpose and connection.

Shanti, a lifelong learner with three graduate degrees, spent her career in education, counseling, and corporate human resources before transitioning into a deeply spiritual journey. She built vibrant communities in Sedona, Arizona, and Florida, integrating energy work, healing, and creativity into her life. At 75, she continues to host women’s drum circles and events like “Shift Happens,” fostering safe, intentional spaces for reflection and growth.

Both women agree on a critical lesson: ethical leadership starts with self-awareness. “We can’t be ethical if we’re not growing every day,” Dr. Jackalyn emphasizes. This belief is deeply rooted in their shared experiences during the late 60s and 70s—a time of empowerment, activism, and transformative cultural change.

“We raised our voices, connected deeply, and made a difference,” Shanti recalls. Music by artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Beatles became a unifying force, inspiring a generation to believe in the power of collective action.

Their decades-long friendship underscores the importance of emotional connection, lifelong learning, and mutual support. As they reflect on their journeys, they offer a powerful reminder: the key to meaningful growth is staying curious, connected, and committed to evolving—at any age.

This is just the beginning of their story. Stay tuned for more inspiring conversations as they continue to share lessons from their lives and leadership journeys.
